some embroidery, a little trip to sweet lubec and the sunshine I wish we had all month

——————⚘ ⚘ ⚘ ⚘ ⚘ ⚘ ——————

Hello my dear pals!

Oh! How has june gloom been treating you?! The longest day has come and gone and summer is undeniably upon us but all month I have been ever so hopeful that we will wake up tomorrow to days and days that feel like s u m m e r but the forecast has been predicting gray and gray and gray forever and always. It feels a bit like the sun will never come out ever again if I’m honest, but we’ve had a few days here and there and some lovely sunny evenings. This month has been a whirlwind and it’s hard to believe it’s nearly over already. Let me tell you about it! And oh gosh I sure hope your june has been a joyous one too.

This has been a lovely month of creative resets despite the chaos that having a shop update brings. Benjamin was away teaching at Maine Fiddle Camp for the middle part of the month and while he was away my friend Lily Bell Dale came to visit for a few days and it truly felt like a wee mini tiny artist’s retreat. I’ve been riding on the high of that weekend all month! We talked and thought a lot about creative routines and Lily once again reminded me of the The Artist’s Way and I finally ordered my own copy. I have long wanted to create more of a non-negotiable morning routine instead of being just a loosey-goosey morning person and although I’ve yet to read The Artist’s Way cover to cover I have already started writing morning pages just to see what it’s all about.

Speaking of routines just for the hell of them… I’ve been going on lots of little adventures whenever the sun peeks out, I absolutely am terrible at working when the days are gray so sunny days are a blessing and a curse as I try very hard to pack them full of productivity before sinking back into gray day lethargy, but filling my (literal and metaphorical) basket with a swimsuit and snacks and knitting and making myself go outside when I can has been a delight. I’d say June has been a lovely month of trying to have routines that make functioning like a human when there is no sun possible. What can I say, I must photosynthesize cause the gray is hard.

One other dispatch from the studio! Preparations have begun for the 2024 calendars. I’ve got some ideas for them and just have to start! I’m a little worried about getting them done with plenty of time to spare and it’s always hard to think about the holiday chaos so early but this will be year 4 of the calendar and I’m pretty excited about it, oh are you ready?! I already know it’ll be a true royal blue on natural cotton and I’m tickled.

I normally write a little bit about what’s been happening around this old decrepit house at this point in the newsletter but I’ve taken hardly any photos of house work this month! We’re deep in prep for a new roof—what a relief that will be but it’s also happening so soon and the rain is making it hard to work on the eves. Benjamin is sometimes active on the instagram account he made for the house so if you’re invested in house projects do follow along there!

Just one final public service announcement before I go! The price of postage is going up on July 9th! Please stockpile stamps while they’re still just 63 cents! Pam, our dear and wonderful postmistress has been ordering stamps for me like crazy, I think I might be able to claim to have the most Tomie dePaola stamps in the state of Maine, if not the greater New England area thanks to Pam’s dedication to tracking down as many of my favorite stamps as she can. Get em while the getting is good, folks!

Anyway. There’s lots to look forward to in July, I think. My dear providence pals are coming tomorrow and to name a few more…you can find me at Allison McKeen’s second annual High Ho Craft Show in Gardiner, Maine on July 15th from 10-4. It’ll be a sweet time! And the second Brooks Maine Contra Dance is happening on the 21st! 8pm, 24 Monroe Highway, Brooks, ME 04921. Then at the end of the month Benjamin and I will both be teaching at Pinewood’s American Week, I think it’s sold out now but that should also be a lovely adventure despite my introverted tendencies that make me say no to most such things…

Alrighty, you know the drill, read on for a few favorites and recommendations from yours truly. I’ll leave you with this funny photo of my mug since I’ve updated my profile picture on nearly every platform to it since I was just so delighted with my solstice crown. Hey! Thank you all for supporting me, as always, and a big extra thank you to my sweet patrons for whom Isa is sitting beside me and packing envelopes with sweet mermaid patches to send out tomorrow as we speak. Mighty grateful for you folks, really truly!

xoxo your friendly neighborhood printmaker,

-Addie

sweet nothings

-I mentioned Tove Jansson last month but dang I’ve been devouring the first 9 Moomin books again and had forgotten how utterly perfect and charming they are. Perfect reading for this time of year.

-Lily also influenced me to make a Merchant and Mills September Jacket since her visit was so rainy and yet she was so dry and cozy in hers. I’m excited to have a personal project to work on and haven’t followed a sewing pattern in YEARS!

-I pumped up the tires on my bike this month to toodle down to the grocery store, etc. It’s a game changer and dang it’s so fun to ride a bike. Even if you live in a tiny rural town where you can walk everywhere you can’t drive to, make sure your bike is cookin!

-Been sooo inspired by autograph clothing again, I’ve finally started collecting my pal’s signatures on a perfect cotton blouse I got a few months ago! I made a lil pinterest board for you just to give you a taste of how good this genre is.

-Benjamin and I have been rewatching Ghosts and it is just as funny and charming as I remember it being. We also rewatched Our Flag Means Death and ditto what I just said.

-Finally, extra extra appreciating Ralph’s Cafe doughnuts, catch em on Saturday mornings if I don’t beat ya to it. Having a tiny diner in your home town can’t be beat. See you there tomorrow? xoxo!
